| Trudeau opera - Political Power (opening number) | | FREE DOWNLOAD. This is a demo of the opening number of the new opera I'm writing with librettist George Elliott Clarke on Canada's former Prime Minister Pierre Elliott Trudeau. This scene takes place in 1949 just as Mao is taking over and opens with Mao celebrating war; Trudeau then appears out of the shadows expressing a counter-sentiment and they ultimately sing simultaneously on opposite sides of the stage. Mao: Douglas Tranquada; Trudeau: John Lindsay-Botten; myself: piano and all other instruments. | | |

| Lushly from Quebecite | | FREE DOWNLOAD. Recorded at the Northrop Frye Literary Festival in New Brunswick Apr. 28th/06 and featuring Dean Bowman and Yoon Choi, this was the first piece I wrote for my jazz opera "Quebecite" (pronounced "KAY-beh-see-tay"). In it, an African-Canadian jazz saxophonist character named Malcolm is courting a Chinese-Canadian architecture student named Colette Chan. The opera was based loosely on the life story of my own parents, with words by Trudeau Fellow George Elliott Clarke (with whom I'm currently collaborating on a new opera on the life of Pierre Elliott Trudeau). Towards the end of the piece I segue to an excerpt from the version of "Lushly" that appears on my new "Serenity Song" CD (2006 Justin Time Records), available for order by clicking on "Artistshare" (above). | | |
